How often do you have puppies?

It really varies; as you can see by the dates on the left, we typically have 1 to 2 litters per year. Female dogs only come into heat every 6 to 8 months, and we try not to breed the girls every time. After that it depends what's going on in our personal lives, if the girl actually gets pregnant, etc.

Depending on the cycles of the girls, we could have litters of puppies a couple months apart, to nearly a couple years. Even once a girl comes into heat, it's typically 7-10 days before she would get pregnant, about 63 days before she is due, and then 6 weeks before the pups are ready to go home, so it is a lengthy process.

Lucy tore her ACL running and so the extra weight of puppies isn't good for her; we plan to get her fixed. We aldo don't plan to breed Lola again until at least 2011, and that may be the last litter she has. We haven't decided yet if we'll get another female and continue to breed.
